  18.                       PILOT REPORTS SEEING WEIRD OBJECTS IN SKY
  19.           Pendleton, Ore., June26,-(AP)-Army and Civil Aeronautics
  20.         Administration spokesman expressed skepticism today over a report
  21.         of nine mysterious objects-as big as airplanes-whizzing over
  22.         western Washington at 1,200 miles an hour.

  24.           But Kenneth Arnold, a flying Boise, Idaho, buisinessman who said
  25.         he timed them by his plane clock, clung to his story of the shiny,
  26.         flat objects, each as big as a DC-4 passenger plane, racing over
  27.         the Cascade Mountains with a peculiar weaving motion "like the tail
  28.         of a kite."

  30.           An Army spokesman commented: "As far as we know, nothing flies
  31.         that fast except a V-2 rocket, which travels too fast to be seen."
